At Fledglings, we believe that great childcare is about more than safety and supervision. It’s about belonging. It’s about a child walking through the door each morning and feeling genuinely welcomed — not just accommodated.
Our approach is grounded in Alberta’s Flight: Early Learning and Care Framework, which sees children as capable, curious, and full of potential from the very beginning. We build our programming around play, exploration, and real relationships — because that’s how children thrive.
We are proudly multicultural, led by people of colour, and staffed by educators from around the world. We don’t just represent Calgary’s diversity — we live it, every day, in every classroom.
Our History
A vision for belonging
Fledglings Educare Centre was founded by Shamira, who immigrated from Africa with a deep conviction: every family deserves a childcare home where their child is truly seen, celebrated, and supported. She had experienced firsthand the isolation of arriving somewhere new — and she wanted to build something different.
Building community from the ground up
From day one, Shamira assembled a team of educators from around the world — teachers who brought Swahili songs, Ubuntu philosophy, multilingual storytelling, and a genuine passion for early childhood. The vision was always bigger than childcare. It was about building a community where every family felt at home.
Seven years and counting
Over seven years, Fledglings has grown into a trusted, beloved centre in Calgary. Families return year after year. Staff build long careers here. The community we set out to create has become real — and it continues to grow with every new family that walks through our doors.
Still the same at our core
We are now a team of 20–25 qualified educators serving families across Calgary. We are licensed under Alberta regulations, government-subsidized, and grounded in Alberta's Flight Curriculum. The faces have grown, but the heart of Fledglings has never changed: every child belongs here.
Shamira
Owner & Director
With roots in Rwanda and training from Singapore, the USA, and England, Shamira brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep belief in the power of play-based, individualized learning. She is passionate about building community and ensuring every child feels seen and supported.
Svitlana
Svitlana has been a valued member of the Montrose Daycare & Childcare team for three years. Originally from Ukraine, she brings a unique background as a trained lawyer. Since moving into early childhood education, Svitlana has discovered a true passion for supporting and nurturing young children. Her dedication and warmth make her a wonderful part of our community.
Chenife Leah Adobas
Toddler Lead
Chenife Leah Adobas is our vibrant Toddler Lead, known for bringing energy, creativity, and patience to every day at Montrose Daycare & Childcare. Passionate about fostering independence and curiosity, Chenife designs playful, sensory-rich experiences that help toddlers explore the world around them while building confidence and social skills. While she is currently on maternity leave, her caring spirit and innovative approach continue to inspire our team and families.
Krystel
Infant Room Lead Teacher
Krystel is our long-time Infant Room Lead Teacher, known for her youthful energy and genuine enthusiasm. She brings warmth, creativity, and a nurturing touch to our infant program, making sure every little one feels safe, supported, and loved. Krystel’s dedication and vibrant spirit help create a joyful, engaging environment where our youngest learners can thrive.
Bernadeth
Preschool Educator
Bernadeth is our bubbly Preschool Educator, bringing warmth and enthusiasm to the classroom every day. She is committed to preparing children for their next big step, with a strong focus on outdoor play, loose parts, and hands-on learning. Bernadeth encourages each child’s natural love of discovery, helping them grow academically, emotionally, and socially in a joyful and supportive environment.
Vivian
Centre Supervisor & Administrator
Vivian is our soft-spoken Centre Supervisor and Administrator, known for her calm presence and exceptional organizational skills. She keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes, handling enrolments, family inquiries, and daily operations with care and efficiency. Vivian’s thoughtful communication and attention to detail ensure that every family’s experience at Montrose Daycare & Childcare is seamless, welcoming, and positive.
